An easy lab for students - This one invokes the chill of ice-pack chemistry by dissolving ammonium nitrate (NH4NO3) in water and then doing the same with sodium hydroxide (NaOH).  The students measure temperature before and after in both cases, and then calculate the molar heat of solvation (heat of solution) for both.  They will find that one is endothermic and the other exothermic.

The lab handout is attached
